TiMod’Elle : « Côté Minou » stands for..?

Côté Minou: The Africa we want to wear…contemporary, refreshing, chic with still all the wonderful things that make the continent so beautiful: Color, texture, pattern, diversity, rhythm, rich, beautiful, original.

Maryanne Mokoko & Stephani Mouapi

TME : Who is behind « Côté Minou »?

CM: The designers behind Côté Minou are us: Maryanne Mokoko & Stephanie Mouapi.

TME : Do you have someone or something that inspired you to get into fashion?

CM: Our childhood in Cameroon was very inspiring. The country is one where the way you portray yourself matters. Most of the women in our family were into looking their best. Stephanie’s aunt is in the fashion industry and Maryanne’s grandmother was a seamstress.

TME : Do you have fashion background/degree?

CM: Not yet but will be getting our fashion credentials soon. We are sure this will aide in the overall process of designing and production.

TME : Have you faced barriers since you stepped into fashion?

CM: The biggest struggle was in the begging when we started defining who we were and adjusting to a new venture in addition to the regular school and work.

TiMod’Elle : What is « Côté Minou » philosophy?

CM: We are all about changing the way you see the African Cloth. Most people especially those in and around the new generation (generation next) do not feel comfortable wearing the cloth and going places. In an attempt to put the continent on the map we design original clothes for anyone interested in representing the continent of Africa no matter what continent you are from.
TME : What makes « Côté Minou » so different?
CM: We think its the versatility and uniqueness in our styles. They are made in variety because we all not the same. Our customers can tell you there is always an outfit for you.

TME : What is your opinion on Africa’s fashion industry?

CM: The African fashion industry is growing…and growing at a rapid rate. We are all coming out of the shadows and getting bolder and showing the world the brighter side of the continent which we already know.

TME :

Your clothes are available for international buyers?

CM: Yes, they are. We ship internationally as we have done to a few places in Europe. We hope to do more of that and eventually have stores outside of the USA.

TME : Do you plan to show in Europe or Africa?

CM: We would love to especially back home. We have not yet been invited to Africa but hopefully we will be in England pretty soon. We are waiting for France and Canada..LOL

TME : Which celebrity would you see representing « Côté Minou »?

CM: Too many…Estelle, Akon, Jamie Foxx, Jada Pinkett & Will Smith, Shia LaBeouf, Alicia Keys, Ciara, Common, and Drew Barrymore just to name a few.

TME : What advice will you give to a young designer who wants to step into the fashion industry?

CM: It is important that you define your commodity. Listen to what’s going on around you, go with your heart, be patient, be dedicated and be resilient. Always remember that a fashion designer should be both artistic, creative and business savvy.

TME : What’s next? How do you see « Côté Minou » in 5 years…?

CM: In five years we would like to experience more fashion shows and fashion weeks, have CM clothing in stores in US and Abroad, and the realize the making of the CM fashion house.

TME : Last question, as an African in America, can we say that you are living the « American Dream » or the « African Dream »?

CM: We are young and still have a lot to learn…we do not wait for an American/African dream but live each day better than the one before and experience the little blessings that come along with simply being alive.
