At the Novotel in Paris, a stone’s throw away from the Eiffel Tower, hundreds of models from all around the city lined up for a comprehensive casting process that could potentially lead to a modeling career.
Le samedi 26 avril 2014, tout près de la Tour Eiffel au Novotel, une centaine de modèles parisiens se retrouvent pour un casting qui leur ouvrira peut être les portes d’une carrière de mannequin international.
New Fashion Generation is a competition to discover new talent from the best young men and women that France has to offer. The massive casting takes place in Lyon, Paris, Marseille, and finishes in Monaco.
The stakes: representation in the agency Enjoy Models, to become the newest face of Carnet de Vol next campaign, or to be a part of the next music video by French DJ Sylvain Armand. Only one boy and one girl from ages 16 to 25 years old will be thrust into this career-making victory.
New Fashion Generation est une compétition qui a pour but de découvrir les nouveaux talents hommes et femmes que la France a à offrir. Cet immense casting a lieu à Lyon, Paris, Marseille et prend fin à Monaco en juillet prochain.
A la clé : Un contrat avec l’agence Enjoy Models pour devenir le nouveau visage de la prochaine campagne Carnet de Vol , ou une apparition dans le prochain clip du DJ français Sylvain Armand. Seul un garçon et une fille âgés de 16 à 25 ans auront la chance de remporter la victoire.
The process is intricate and incredibly organized; these candidates were beforehand selected on photos. Upon their arrival, contestants are given a number, and asked to demonstrate a runway walk for a panel of experts (among them Marie Michaud, ex-international model and Anne Davené co-founders of the Fashion Communication & Event Agency “Une Graine de Mode”).
Le processus est simple, ces candidats ont été préalablement sélectionnés sur photos. A leur arrivée, un numéro leur est remis et chacun doit d’abord défiler devant un jury composé d’experts dont Marie Michaud et Anne Davené Co-fondatrices de l’agence de communication et d’évènementiel autour de la Mode “Une graine de mode”.
Then, it’s off to the specialists from the Makeup Forever Academy and Dessange salon to be primped, and afterward to change into test outfits. Each contestant is then photographed, and for most, this marks the end of their journey.

Those who have caught the eyes of the jury continue on. The on-site photographer takes them aside one at a time. They are to pose naturally, as if in a real shooting, but they will filmed, to allow the panel to fully asses their movement on a set and the way their personality will truly shine through.
Ce qui auront sur capté l’attention du jury poursuive le casting, aux côté d’un photographe présent et les fait poser dans les conditions réelles d’un shooting photo. L’objectif est de capturer en vidéo leur talent et pose en studio et faire ressortir à l’écran leur personnalité.
We were given an opportunity to speak with a few of the models, for many of whom it was the first casting of their lives! One model in particular, Olivanie, was very new to the modeling industry.
Though she will be 16 by July, a stipulation set forth by the contest, she was only 15 on the day of the casting. “I am still in high school,” she confided, “but I already know that I love the fashion world and want to be a big part of it!”
Nous avons eu l’opportunité de parler avec certains d’entre eux, pour beaucoup ce casting est le premier de leur vie ! Un modèle en particulier, Olivanie, est toute nouvelle dans le mannequinat.
Le règlement du casting stipule que les candidats doivent avoir 16 ans, la jeune fille n’a elle que 15 ans le jour du casting, quoiqu’elle aura 16 ans en juillet (date de la finale). « Je suis toujours au lycée, » confie-t-elle, « mais je sais déjà que j’aime le monde de la mode et que je veux en faire partie ! ».

We met other models with much more experience, including N’deye, a 20-year-old Parisian. “This is maybe my fourth or fifth casting, I’ve stopped counting! I’ve already done quite a few photo shoots, and apart from that I’m still in school.”
N’deye was a clear stand-out from the others during this particular day of casting, and seemed incredibly at ease in front of a camera. “Each film is going to be in black and white,” explained Chris, the photographer. “It’s important that they stand out through the sameness, and I like her energy for that.”
Nous avons rencontré d’autres modèles avec un peu plus d’expérience, parmi eux N’deye, parisienne de 20 ans. « C’est peut-être mon quatrième ou cinquième casting, j’ai arrêté de compter ! J’ai déjà fais plusieurs séances photos, à part cela je suis toujours à l’école? »
N’deye se détache clairement des autres ce jour-là , et paraît incroyablement à l’aise face à la caméra. « Chaque film sera en noir et blanc, » explique Chris, le photographe. « C’est important qu’il face la différence à travers leur identité, et j’aime cette énergie. »

Though many of the models stumbled upon the casting on Facebook, most seemed extremely motivated and focused on the task at hand.
Brice, a modeling novice, was enthusiastic about the mock shooting. “I like that modeling allows us to act, and try different characters.” Another, 17-year-old Elie, says, “This competition is perfect for my ambitions. I really want to be the face of a brand!”
Bien que la plupart des modèles se soient inscrits par hasard via Facebook, la plupart sont extrêmement motivés et concentrés pour mener à bien leur casting.
Brice, un mannequin débutant, est très enthousiaste à l’idée de cette simulation de shooting. « J’aime le fait que le mannequinat nous permette de jouer un rôle, et d’essayer différents personnages. » Un autre participant, Elie, 17 ans, nous dis : « Cette compétition est parfaite pour mes ambitions. J’ai vraiment envide de devenir l’égérie d’une marque ».

After the last casting in Marseille, the results will be posted on New Fashion Generation’s Facebook page May 15th, announcing the top 20 competitors (10 men and 10 women). These finalists will then travel to Monaco to finish the competition and hopefully become the fashion world’s newest young male and female model!
